The garden in November
Cover perennial borders with bark mulch or compost soil. Only shorten the roses, don’t prune them! Cut back to far the rose bushes could freeze back to the grafting point.
Evergreen shrubs and conifers must be watered during dry periods. Frost sensible shrubs should be protected with fir branches.
Dot cut back ornamental grasses, like pampas grass, but tie them together. They look more attractive and the plant is protected, as the heart stays dry. The old tuft will be cut only shortly before the new growth comes out in the spring.
Many garden jobs can be done on mild winter days: repairing or building paths, even earthwork or garden remodeling.
Leaves can remain under hedges or shrubs as they insulate plant roots and provide shelter, for example, for hedgehogs.
